Metal + Glass workshops and course update!

The March metal + glass, 8 week courses are starting to fill up- register soon!

This 8 week course covers basic hand sawing, forming and fabrication, soldering (joint, sweat and pic), vitreous enamels on copper, depletion gilding Sterling silver, wax carving and cuttlebone casting, bezel settings, tube setting, rivets (cold connections), simple findings, and flame-working soft glass. All for $275! Materials and expendable included for most projects/processes. Next courses start Monday March 3rd and Wednesday March 12th

Electroforming organic and non-organic objects!

This is an amazing process! Grow metal onto acorns, bone, glass, plastic, wax.

In this workshop students will grow copper onto various materials they bring into class. The layer of copper is thick enough to stand on its own. Depending on the material electroformed, students might later plate, paint, heat patina, or add vitreous enamels to this surface adding more texture and interest. 3 spaces available for this workshop. 6:30-9:30pm, 8 weeks, 1 evening per week Monday evenings
$275 per person, 5 people max, 3 people min. $100 deposit necessary to hold space.
evening #1: First evening: working with copper-safety, drilling, sawing, fold-forming.
evening #2: Making a band ring out of silver (stamp, hammer finish, roller print, etc.)
evening #3: working with wax create pieces w/the lost wax technique- to be cast in Sterling, Brass or Gold.
evening #4: Finishing wax projects, cleaning up castings> cuttlebone casting (finish up models)
evening #5: bezel settings and/or tube settings, alternative settings for found objects, clean-up castings
evening #6: Flameworking- intro to mandrel wound molten glass
evening #7: Enameling copper projects, forming, how to make your own findings.
evening #8: finish up projects

Fire + Gravity  (Next course starts January 7th 2014)
Sculpt with molten glass
6:30-9:30pm, 1 evening per week
$340.00 per person, 4 people max per course, 3 people min – $170 deposit required to hold space.
Focus on beginning mandrel wound glass beads. Working with beautiful Italian, Chinese and German hand-pulled glass students create beads, and rings. History is discussed, glass formulas, annealing cycles, glass suppliers/makers, and more! Create your own glass beads.
Continuing where you left off the 1st day, learn how to sculpt different forms, rake, encase, make ‘twisties’, simple murrini, mix your own colours! Make hollow, florals, zebra & tiger striped beads, start sculpting! metal -in- glass! Using silver foil/leaf in your beads. Work with ivory glass, silver and clear, pull silvered ivory stringer. Add silver foil to other colours and see what happens!
Start working off-mandrel. Warning: Off-Mandrel flameworking is addictive.  Work Large! Create beautiful focal pieces, intergalactic marbles, and pendants. Demos include: Small vessels (small scale glass blowing), working with metal mesh, and more! All materials included*! No experience necessary! *Each student receives aspecial glass kit

metal 2 (course starts up January 8th)

forming, fabricating, casting, electroforming
6:30-10pm, 1 evening per week, Wednesday evenings starting Jan 8th to March 26th, 12 weeks (Open Studio time available during the course)
$180pp + $200 lab & materials fee**
Demonstrations in fold forming, etching (copper & silver), and hollow forms (making silhouette dies), electroplating, enamelling, sand casting.   This course gives students hands on experience manipulating metal, electroforming, and embellishing metal, while sharpening soldering and fabrication skills working on personal projects.
Students will work together and independantly on their projects. This course starts out with an introduction on techniques covered, expectations, design considerations, and ends with students finishing off fold formed samples/pieces, an etched hollow form, electroforming organic/inorganic objects, and sand casting. Fast paced, students need to show up ready for action! Beginners welcome!

Fused Glass Components for Jewelry, Wearables & Functional items
Friday, Feb 7 6-9:00pm, Saturday Feb 8 10am – 5pm, Sunday Feb 9th 10am – 5pm (4.5 day workshop)
3 student minimum, 5 Student max.,

Fused glass (Kiln-glass) is frequently used in jewelry, but the emphasis is often on quantity rather than quality. In this class you will learn to distinguish your work through thoughtful design, careful studio practices, multiple firings, coldworking methods and, ultimately, good craftsmanship. Various glass c.o.e’s will be discussed, compatibility, annealing schedules, slumping and tack fusing.

Instruction will cover creating jewelry elements for a variety of forms, functions and styles; working with pattern bars, Vitrigraph, stencils, etc. Samples of and discussions about using kilnformed elements in jewelry applications or with other wearables will also be included, as will practical considerations such as studio setup and costs. All materials included. No experience necessary!

Ars Vitraria Experimentalis : Glass casting workshop
January, 10th start/intro 6:30-9:30pm then Saturday 11, 18 & 25th and Sunday 12, 19 & 26th 10am to 5pm
5 Student max., 3 student min. $180pp + $200 lab & materials fee**

Glass casting workshop (small to medium scale objects)
Learn the basics of glass casting. Up-cycle your wine or beer bottles into a beautiful work of art! Students will learn how to make molds of existing objects using Alginate, as well as model new ones from clay and wax.
Working with beautiful crystal- Gaffer Glass, soda lime -Bullseye- glass as well as recycling wine and/or beer bottles students will learn different firing and annealing schedules for casting glass. And simple cold-working without expensive equipment! No experience necessary!

Check out nanopod’s new pricing structure! Some of our workshops and courses will now require a Lab and Materials fee upfront, as a non-refundable deposit.  Your ‘deposit’ goes towards materials, and expendables necessary for the workshop or course you registered for. Many items need to be purchased in advance due to shipping distances, and Holiday shipping cut-off dates, etc.
