Metal + Glass course> overcome the Ides of March! ….April

Learn how to form, fabricate, solder, set-stones and the entire Lost Wax casting process & more in our 4 wk Metal + Glass course.

METAL + GLASS 4wk:  Monday & Wednesday evenings – Learn basic Goldsmithing.  6:30-9:30pm Monday, April 9th  $285pp (deposit of $142.50 to reserve seat)

evening #1: First evening: working with copper: safety, drilling, sawing. Adding textures.

evening #2: Making a band ring out of silver (stamp, hammer finish, roller print, etc.)

evening #3: Working with wax create pieces w/the lost wax technique- to be cast in Sterling silver or bronze.

evening #4: Finishing wax projects, invest models for casting in Glass and Metal (separately) Waxes for metal casting are weighed and calculated (sterling runs $2.50/grm unless lab fee has been purchased).

evening #5: Cast moulds in sterling silver or bronze! Remove glass pieces from moulds.

evening #6: Enameling copper projects, forming, how to make your own basic findings.

evening #7: Bezel settings cabochon stones or fossils or crystals, or an enamelled or Fused glass piece.

evening #8: Finish up projects

What’s included:
Approx 4×5” piece of copper sheet, 2’ copper wire, sterling silver for 1 ring band, fine silver bezel wire to set 1 cabochon cut stone. Glass is included for casting/flame-working (whatever method is covered), silver solder to complete class projects, wax, bronze/brass for lost wax casting (20grams) & powdered vitreous enamel, 1 doz saw blades, 1 1mm drill bit, 1 half face particulate respirator, nitrile gloves, refractory materials for casting moulds.  Students are encouraged to supply their own cabochon cut stones, crystals, rocks, etc.

Additional materials not included: cabochon cut stone(s), sterling silver grain for lost wax castings, sterling silver sheet/plate for setting stones on/constructing other pieces.  Sterling silver casting grain may be purchased at $2.50gram.

The lab fees offer tools and materials for students to continue projects at home and start setting-up their own studio.

In this course students carve/sculpt jeweller’s wax making a ring or a pendant that will be cast in Sterling silver. Burn out casting will be discussed, and low-tech casting methods will be discussed and demonstrated.

Students will learn how to make moulds for wax injection/production work. Casting stones in place, such as: diamonds, sapphires, meteorites and certain lab grown stones will be discussed/demonstrated.

The first evening starts with an introduction to various jeweller’s wax, carving tools, subtractive and additive sculpting. Students then discuss their design ideas and begin to carve/sculpt their pieces to be cast.

The second evening we will discuss how to cast organic materials; bone, shell, or wood. Some items may be ‘burnt out’ within a casting flask, while others require moulds to be made. Casting various stones in place is discussed and some stones will be available for students to experiment with.

Each evening covers a different part of the Lost Wax process into finishing work to a high polish or brushed finish as well as working with patinas.

*students wishing to cast in gold will be given supplier information. Copper may be added to sterling silver and/or fine silver to create Shibuichi. Casting organic materials will be discussed. Some items may be ‘burnt out’ within a casting flask, while other organic materials require moulds to be made. Casting various stones in place is discussed and some stones will be available for students to experiment with.

Glass Fusing Intensive workshop

Glass Fusing workshop  Sept 1, 2 & 3, 9 & 10th $275pp+(optional) lab fee  This intensive class introduces fundamental concepts of creating glass objects in the kiln. 1st Friday evening overview demonstrates the Vitrigraph kiln/flameworking cane/murrine.  Students will learn kiln forming/carving towards making window pieces, bowls/plates, sculptural, wearable items and more! Students work with Bullseye glass sheet, frit/powder, rod and stringer.    No experience with glass is required for this course.
Friday evening 6:30-9:30pm: Introduction/demonstration of vitrigraph kiln and flame working cane/murrini for use in kiln forming glass.
Saturday afternoon (noon to 6pm): Students have the opportunity of hand pulling cane/murrini at the torch. Students layout their glass patterns, learn how to kiln carve glass, set-up the kiln for kiln forming/fusing.
Friday evening  (6:30 start): Students learn how to use a diamond tile saw, diamond tools for cleaning up work from previous weekend, items are fired over night.
Saturday afternoon  (noon-5pm): Students layout their remaining glass designs and patterns for kiln carving/forming.
Sunday afternoon  (noon-5pm): Students cold work glass items, finish up their projects. Any remaining glass can be formed and picked up during the following week.
Lab fee (optional): $100 covers coloured glass sheet*, metals, & expendables
Students are emailed concerning sheet glass colour choice, everyone receives a 10″x10″ sheet of clear Tekta
