Glass Fusing and bezel setting/ring band class

Sunday: Items are taken out of the kiln/annealer and cleaned, cold working is demonstrated with the diamond saw, and simple hand-cold working methods.
Participants then bezel set one of their fused pieces as well as learn how to form, and solder a sterling silver ring band!

Ma découverte enthousiaste du four Vitrigraph

L’an passé, j’ai eu l’honneur de recevoir une bourse de la GAAC, la Bourse de Projet  2013. Cela m’a permis d’approfondir ma passion pour la représentation artistique de l’histoire naturelle et la réalisation de lieux imaginaires à travers la recherche, la création et le développement de l’art des baguettes au Vitrigraph et des murines. Habituellement, le murine et les baguettes se travaillent en atelier de soufflage ou de chalumeau. Mon but était d’obtenir un effet similaire au travail des murines et des baguettes à chaud, mais en bien plus petit, à l’échelle de l’orfèvrerie. Lorsque je travaillais les murines et les baguettes au chalumeau, je ne suis  jamais parvenue à obtenir l’effet (ou peut être la qualité) escompté.

Au départ, j’espérais pouvoir employer de façon améliorée mon four AF138. Mais ce four ne pouvait pas dépasser la température de 1300°F. Pour travailler les baguettes au Vitrigraph, il faut une température entre 1600°F et 1680°F.

Le four Caldera de Paragon est prévu pour le Vitrigraph et peut atteindre des températures au-delà des 2300°F. Après plusieurs mois d’essais et d’erreurs répétitives, et grâce au soutien généreux de la GAAC, j’ai enfin commandé un Caldera.

En attendant que le Caldera arrive, je me suis amusée à envisager différents assemblages. Pour assembler, il faut un pot en céramique ou en terra cotta avec un trou à sa base. C’est la façon dont le verre est assemblé, ainsi que le nombre de pièces/couches de verre (verre concassé ou baguette), qui déterminent  le motif des murines. 33 à 36 disques allant de 3 à 6 po de diamètre sont nécessaires pour remplir un pot.

Learn how to cast polyurethane resin using silicone/flexible moulds. You’ll make Open Face (1 part) and 2 part molds and use them to create plastic reproductions. The instructor will help you select objects that can be molded, and how to complete the moulding and casting process. Personal projects are welcome, but there will be a limit to project size.

All materials included; silicone mould material, polyurethane plastic, clay, mixing containers, tints and dyes, nitrile gloves will be available for use. Participants will create at least 3 pieces

Everyone needs to bring in their own half-face respirators for use when pouring/mixing polyurethane.

Take the class together and learn to make your own custom wedding bands! In this class you’ll be introduced to simple goldsmithing skills of sawing, filing, sanding, soldering, texturing, annealing, stamping, polishing, safety, and design. By the end of class you will have a beautiful handmade Sterling silver ring! Learn how to properly size your finger, calculate the length of metal necessary, add texture to metal using different hammers, stamping tools, or add the texture of a leaf, feather or paper. How to anneal Sterling silver, form, solder, and finishing techniques from hyper shiny bling to a brushed, matte finish. All materials included! {Sterling silver for 1 ring band} NO experience necessary.

Working with glass powders students can make feathers, leaves, various shapes and designs. Create gifts for the holidays, ornaments, jewelry, sculptures. This workshop is a great introduction to pâte de verre, which uses granules of glass to create sculptural forms. Students will make clay models and plaster/silca moulds that will then be painted/packed with glass. Pâte de verre methods and design options are demonstrated. 2 to 3 items are produced.

Student pieces will then be kiln-dried and back-filled if necessary prior to a final firing.

Pieces will be fired after the workshop and available for pick-up a few days later. Students will then book a time to come in, de-mold and lightly cold-work their pieces. This step generally takes 1-2hrs. btn_buynowCC_BLK

evening #4: Finishing wax projects, cleaning up castings> cuttlebone casting (finish up models)

evening #5:NEW: Glass Casting- basic/simple mould making and casting a glass object to use in your jewelry!

evening #6: bezel settings and tab setting for cabochon stones and your glass work. Clean-up glass & metal castings

evening #7:Enameling copper projects, forming, how to make your own findings.

evening #8: finish up projects
