From cultivating mycelium, Microbial art, Phyto photography, Bio-Sonification, Fermenting forms, Physarum encounters & more!
Workshops are available individually or register for the entire series.
Workshops include PDF files of materials/supply info, links to recorded workshop(s), Bioart/sciart maker space labs throughout Canada, Mexico, Europe, SE Asia, and the United States. Material and supply lists will be sent out in advance of each workshop when possible.* If not in advance, participants can expect to receive materials lists, etc. after the workshops.

Workshops will run $45 per or $150 for the entire series.
This workshop series will take place online via Zoom

The Zoom workshops will begin with an introduction then a slide presentation, Q&A, 10 minute break, demos, Q&A . Workshops running longer than 3/hrs will have a short break every hour.  Chat will be open for participants to share questions, links to their work, etc.

Bio-Sonification: Potential uses towards bio-remediation, art, music and more. Step by step Breadboarding of electronic components creating an Arduino shield to building your own Module. Inspiration, field recording and more!

Workshop 2 (perhaps of interest to ceramicists and fashion/textile designers) Sunday, October 4th 12 PM to  4 PM EDT

Microbial Art: from Bio pigments/inks, Obvara glazes and Winogradsky Columns= Enter the world of microbes!
Introduction to bioPigments, step by step how-to’s, applications and inspiration in abundance!
Tosca has travelled Australia, Canada, Iceland and NZ researching Obvara mixtures.
What is Obvara? Obvara, which is said to be pronounced ab-vara (and is sometimes known as ‘Baltic raku’) is believed to have originated in Eastern Europe (mainly Belarus, Estonia and Latvia) in around the 12th century. The technique is known as ‘hardened ceramics’ or ‘blackened pots’ in Latvia, ‘sourdough pottery’ or ‘yeast pottery’ in Lithuania and ‘scalded ceramics’ in Russia.
Obvara interacts with the clay to create random, chaotic patterns. Often making lichen-like, dendritic patterns, and structures on the clay surface.

Workshop 3 (in partnership with Interaccess) Sunday October 18th 1PM to 4PM EDT  PWYC {link to register will be available in September}  Mycelium Bio-Materials 

From cultivating mycelium edibles, to sculpting, creating mycelium ‘leather’, acoustic panels and more! Working with various substrates and additives, growth mediums, 3D armatures, recycled materials and heaps of inspiration. Step by step demonstrations on pasteurizing, ‘growing’ a mycelium bag, mushrooms used for leather and dying and more! During this workshop participants are introduced to the amazing potentials of mycelium. Mycelium can be used in industrial design, art, architecture – the possibilities are seemingly endless! Check out the Mycelium Martian Dome project, an installation that took place in 2019 through a residency at the Museum of Contemporary Art Toronto in partnership with the Ontario Science Centre. NASA Ames Research Centre will cite this artist’s vision/public installation in Phase II in their research towards fungi based building/insulating materials.

 

Workshop 4   

SCOBY Fermenting Forms
Cultivate Kombucha (Medusomyces gisevii) leather at home and start designing your own clothing, accessories and experimentations with this flexible bio-material alternative to animal sourced textiles.
Participants will learn how to grow and work with SCOBY=Symbiotic Culture Of Bacteria and Yeast through step by step instructions. Demonstrations will be given on methods to dye, dry and finish SCOBY leather, discussing design ideas, process and inspiration from artists currently working with bacterial cellulose, as well as suggested suppliers both local and abroad.

Phyto + Fungal photography Sunday, November 15th 12 PM to 3 PM EDT – with potential to run to 4 PM

Photographers and artists working with alternative plant based developers and toners to photographers collaborating with
microbes and fungi in their work. Step by step demonstrations, inspiration and safety protocols. Developing prints using weeds found in your garden or grocery store, coffee, fungi, to working with microbes. Experiments with instant film, photographic paper, negatives and cyanotypes will be discussed.

Workshop 6

Physarum Encounters  Sunday, November 22nd 12 PM to 3 PM

During this workshop, Tosca Terán introduces the potential of slime mould for collaboration at the intersection of art and science. Participants learn how to set-up their kitchen/studio into safe, mini-Physarum Biolabs towards raising Physarum polycephalum.
The workshop invites participants to experiment with different biological media and feeding substrates, reflecting on how they inform the growth and morphology of protozoans and protists. Discussions around working with Physarum towards mapping areas (your daily bike route, for instance) to slime circuitry, artists working with Physarum.
*Physarum polycephalum is a yellow ameboid dweller of decaying logs and decomposing vegetation on dim forest floors. It made headlines when Japanese biologists demonstrated its uncanny ability to optimize paths through mazes and reproduce tracks between mapped Tokyo railway stations. Since then, slime mould has become an attractive living substrate for research in diverse areas such as mathematical modelling, computation and bio-art.

During this workshop, Tosca Terán introduces participants to the amazing potential of mycelium for collaboration at the intersection of art and science. Participants learn how to transform their kitchens and closets into safe, mini-Mycelium Biolabs, learn how to cultivate mycelium, and leave the workshop with a live Mycelium planter/bowl form, as well as a wide array of possibilities of how they might work with this sustainable bio-material. All materials are provided.

This workshop includes everything you need to grow a round planter, as well as hand-sculpt a small form plus, a full bag of substrate inoculated with mycelium! Suggestions on how to grow other forms or grow onto various armatures (3D printed, hand-knit/crocheted, wood structures, etc) will be discussed.

Bio-Data Touchpads @I/A

Tosca Teran will lead a workshop on how to build customized touchpads that can trigger sounds, samples, and sequencers, collect bio-data, be used with analog or digital synthesizers, and so much more. With this device, you can start listening to your BioData!

Create your own custom touchpads and you will be able to:
– Use with your analogue or digital synth
– Trigger sounds/samples
– Trigger sequences
– Control a robot
– Collect bio-data
– Use with Unity and more!

Participants will learn how to design and etch customized touchpads using their own hand-drawn and digitally created images. While designs are etching we will discuss and design the circuitry to be included on our touchpads! Participants will start with simple on/off touchpads and move into a multi-touch and slide-touch touchpad.

Mapping with Slime Mould • Sunday, March 22nd 1pm-4pm $50/pp

Next time you go on a picnic bring along your Bio-sonification Module & listen to the sounds of the forest, how it responds to your presence then, place the electrodes onto your friends or hook up your houseplant and see how it really feels!
Students receive step by step guidance putting together their own Bio-Sonification Module kit and help in understanding how the device works.
Last half of the workshop participants place electrodes onto plants, fungi, themselves or each other and listen to their Bio-data through Ableton Live, Animoog, Model 15 (or similar digital music apps and analogue synths) creating a Bio-Sonification Symphony!

Each participant receives their very own Bio-Sonification Module kit, a Module container file that they can 3D print offsite, a set of electrodes and electrode pads.

Sculpting with Mycelium workshop.

Sculpting with Mycelium: working with environmentally friendly, renewable materials
TBA 7pm-9pm. 

 

Bio-materials are grown over several days, participants meet up every 5th or 6th evening after the first start-up date to check on their Mycelium’s growth and sculpt or desiccate their forms! $60/pp includes:
1 round planter growth form
1 bag of Hemp substrate inoculated with Mycelium
Sculpting mix
Nitrile gloves

This workshop includes everything you need to grow a round planter, as well as hand-sculpt a small form plus, a full bag of substrate inoculated with mycelium! Suggestions on how to grow other forms or grow onto various armatures (3D printed, hand knit/crocheted) is discussed.

Evening 1: we start with an introduction and demonstrate how the growth materials work, as well as discuss Mycelium; what it is, its benefits to us and our environment. Then everyone feeds their Mycelium and leaves them to rest in a safe, cozy dark place until the next workshop evening!
Evening 2: WOW look how you’ve grown! Your Mycelium has grown and consumed its substrate. Now we gently, yet firmly work with our Mycelium through sculpting with special media and/or using forms to grow our planters!
After forming/sculpting the Mycelium is again placed into a dark, cozy space where it can happily grow to fill or cover our structures!
Evening 3: Your planter/sculpture is ready for desiccation and use! Everyone unpacks their forms, weighs them and then we bake them until they weigh approximately 35% less then pre-desiccated weight. Participants also have the option to dry their forms at home. Once dried students can plant lovely succulents, cactus, or use their forms as sculptures or packing materials and marvel over nature!
Organic tea, coffee and snacks will be offered during workshop evenings.

Bio-Sonification & nanopod studio’s metamorphosis

From the overwhelmingly, unexpected, positive response my Grow Op 2019 installation, Primordia received it is clear the time has come to move forward with sculpting mycelium, working with mycelium towards bio-remediation, recording bio-data from mycelium, visiting old growth forests, delving deeper into my interest in mycology.

 nanopod: Hybrid Studio has always been dedicated to research, and my love of science: Astronomy, biology (marine, fungi/mycology, bacteria, bio-hacking), microscopy, geography- to name a few of my interests! After the Fukushima disaster, my focus started to change from making ‘jewellery’ or wearable metal art and flame-working glass to researching new materials I might work with and learn from that are not harmful to our shared environment, use less energy or give back energy.  Initially, I participated in workshops teaching Japanese techniques of working with paper (turning it into threads or yarn and/or waterproofing washi), clay and studying Obvara (because- yeast glaze!) to growing gourmet mushrooms and using the mycelium blocks to sculpt with!    Sound art has been a serious interest of mine since putting together mix-tapes in grade school, recording my friend’s voices, field recordings to building circuits that go beep (until I figured out how to make these circuits do more than just that!) I now combine my love of ‘found’ sounds and mycology. So, my focus seriously zeroed in on working with non-human organisms, listening to them (if you will) mid-2016 and this focus has snowballed.  I am forever grateful for all of the support nanopod studio received as a goldsmith and silversmith studio school and the love received as a glass studio and school. Now I feel the time has come to move deeper into my work with sound, mycelium towards bio-remediation and giving back to the planet and its inhabitants in a more material friendly manner. This website will remain up throughout 2019, workshop offerings will start to wain as nanopod: Hybrid Studio metamorphs into its new form.

Happy New Year! 2019: Bio-sonification, Pate de Verre, Metal + Glass & more!

2019 Beginning workshops and courses! I believe experiences make the best gifts plus, learning new skills, and working with your hands!

Pate de Verre workshops – Participants learn how to fill a pre-made mould of a small bowl with glass paint, glass powder and fine glass -frit-, the moulds are then fired and participants return to the studio to divest and finish their bowls.  $150/pp Materials included, no experience necessary!  Weekend workshop: January 5th & 6th, Sat: 12-3pm/Sun: 1pm-4pm
 

Students learn the basics of pâte de verre from start to finish while making a thin-walled, kiln formed bowl. Students have access to a broad palette of coloured frit (crushed glass) and samples to help predict and understand fired qualities. Demonstrations include various techniques of working with glass powders against the mold, working with color reactions, as well as how to back-fill a packed mold to support the walls of the piece during firing.

Students receive step by step guidance putting together their own Bio-Sonification Module kit and help in understanding how the device works. Once kits are built participants are shown how to change Midi scales/channels, LED brightness and more with Arduino. We will discuss MIDI and how it works.

Metal + Glass 4-week course Starts up March 4th and runs – 8 evenings. Monday & Wednesday 6:30-9:30pm  $285/pp  

evening #1: First evening: working with copper: safety, drilling, sawing. Adding textures.

evening #2: Making a ring band out of silver (stamp, hammer finish, roller print, etc.)

evening #3: Working with wax create a small piece w/the lost wax technique- to be cast in Sterling silver.

evening #4: Finishing wax projects, invest models for casting in metal. Waxes for metal casting are weighed and calculated (*sterling runs $2.50/grm. Lab fee includes 20grams of sterling silver casting grain). Lo-tech casting with Cuttlefish bone.

evening #5: Cast moulds in sterling silver!

evening #6: Enameling copper projects, forming, how to make your own basic findings.

evening #7: Bezel settings cabochon stones or fossils or crystals, or an enamelled glass piece.

evening #8: Finish up projects  No experience necessary!

What’s included:
Approx 4×5” piece of copper sheet, 2’ copper wire, sterling silver for 1 ring band, fine silver bezel wire to set 1 cabochon cut stone. Glass is included for casting/flame-working (whatever method is covered), silver solder to complete class projects, wax, 10 grams of sterling silver for casting (either cuttlefish or lost wax), powdered vitreous enamel, 1 doz saw blades, 1 1mm drill bit, 1 half face particulate respirator, nitrile gloves, refractory materials for casting moulds.  Students are encouraged to supply their own cabochon cut stones, crystals, rocks, etc.

Additional materials not included: cabochon cut stone(s), extra sterling silver grain for lost wax castings, sterling silver sheet/plate for setting stones on/constructing other pieces.  Sterling silver casting grain may be purchased at $2.50gram.

The lab fees offer tools and materials for students to continue projects at home and start setting up their own studio.

Students receive step by step guidance putting together their own Bio-Sonification Module kits and help in understanding how the device works. To better understand how the Bio-Sonification module works, on the first evening we Breadboard our components and Flash our Atmega chips. Once everything is connected and operating properly we then solder our kits together! Once the kits are built participants are shown how to change Midi scales/channels, LED brightness and more with Arduino. We will also discuss MIDI and how it works.
Last half of the workshop participants place electrodes onto plants, fungi, themselves or each other and listen to their Bio-data through Ableton Live, Animoog, Model 15 (or similar digital music apps and analogue synths) creating a Bio-Sonification Symphony!

Various plants, soil and Mycelium will be available during the workshop for
participants to place their electrodes onto along with iConnectivity Midi to USB/Lightning connectors for participants to try out different instruments/software; Ableton, Animoog on iPad, Model 15 (on iPhone & iPad), Moog Mother32s, Make Noise NoCoast, etc. Other possibilities are shown and discussed, for instance, Ableton Max/MSP Midi video disruption!

What’s included?
Each participant receives their very own Bio-Sonification Module kit (Printed circuit board and all necessary components (resistors, capacitors, LEDs, chips, etc), a Module container file that can be 3D printed offsite and a lo-tech version we will put together during the workshop, a set of electrodes w/Bio-medical pads OR electrode clips (participants can choose during the workshop).

Prerequisite? Using a soldering iron is super helpful as we will be soldering electrical components to circuit boards (We will also show people how-to). Some Ableton Live knowledge is helpful, but not necessary!
What to bring along?
Solderless Breadboard: We will have some available for use, but feel free to bring your own!
A laptop with Ableton live installed or a Smartphone or iPad with the Animoog app or Model 15 app installed or Mini Moog Model D!
There are many digital synths available for smartphones and iPads, make sure the one(s) you want to work with are MIDI capable.  Please bring headphones.

Biodata Sonification is a process to translate complex real-time sensor data into musical notes and controls, exploring the auditory sensory modality to provide insights into invisible phenomenon.

As an artist, I am interested in how all things sense and communicate. Directly connecting to our surrounding biology. Electrodes are attached to non-human organisms and pick up subtle fluctuations in galvanic conductance on the surface of these organisms. These fluctuations are translated to MIDI using technology based off of the original MIDI Sprout. Through sampling pulse widths and identifying fluctuations, MIDI note and control messages are generated, which are then sent into analogue and digital synthesizers.

I was so excited by my first experiments of attaching electrodes onto Mycelium (I started growing Mycelium in February 2018) that I immediately wanted to share this experience with everyone! This spawned Midnight Mushroom Music and I am wholly devoted! Every Saturday night at 23:00/11pm EST a new episode goes live through the Mycelium Network (aka Soundcloud & iTunes).

Sculpting with Mycelium: working with environmentally friendly, renewable materials
Tuesday evening,  September 18th 7pm-9pm.

Bio-materials are grown over several days, participants meet up every 5th or 6th evening after the first start-up date to check on their Mycelium’s growth and/or sculpt or desiccate their forms! $60/pp includes:
1 round planter growth form
1 bag of Hemp substrate inoculated with Mycelium

Grow-It-Yourself Mushroom® Material is the perfect way to bring your Earth-friendly creations to life! Whether you have a product idea in mind, or just want to experiment with the material at home, GIY Mushroom® Material is meant for you! This workshop includes everything you need to grow a round (or square) planter, as well as hand-sculpt a small form! Evening 1 we start with an introduction and demonstrate how this growth material works, as well as discuss Mycelium; what it is, its benefits to us and our environment. Then everyone feeds their Mycelium and leaves them to rest in a safe, cozy dark place until the next workshop evening!
Evening 2: WOW look how you’ve grown! Your Mycelium has grown and consumed its substrate. Now we gently, yet firmly work with our Mycelium through sculpting with special media and/or using forms to grow our planters!
After forming/sculpting the Mycelium is again placed into a dark, cozy space where it can happily grow to fill or cover our structures!
Evening 3: Your planter/sculpture is ready for desiccation and use! Everyone unpacks their forms, weighs them and then we bake them until they weigh approximately 35% less then pre-desiccated weight. Participants also have the option to dry their forms at home. Once dried we plant our lovely succulents and marvel over nature!

Organic tea, coffee and snacks will be offered during workshop evenings.
